Welcome to the memorial page for

Nadia Dubik-Hawryshkewich

Suddenly, on January 10th, 2018, while on family vacation in Vancouver, Nadia Dubik-Hawryshkewich passed away. Nadia was born in May of 1957 in a small town close to Olsztyn in what is now northern Poland. In July of 1962, Nadia and her parents immigrated to Winnipeg. At the age of five, she became the family translator and spokesperson. In these early years, she was actively involved in the Ukrainian community, including Ukrainian school at Chitalnya Prosvita, Plast Ukrainian Youth Organization and Blessed Virgin Mary Ukrainian Catholic Parish. She graduated Sisler High School in 1975 and pursued a degree in education at the University of Manitoba (B.Ed. 1979). After a few years of work as a substitute teacher, she moved to Toronto and began working at Buduchnist Credit Union as a teller initially and advanced to become a loans officer. In 1985, Nadia married Wally (Vlodko) Hawryshkewich and moved to Ottawa. Her son Andrew arrived in November of 1986, followed by her daughter Natalie in November of 1988. Once the kids started school, Nadia re-entered the workforce at Buduchnist Credit Union in Ottawa.  She eventually became Branch Manager, a position she held until she retired in 2016.

First and foremost, Nadia loved her family, tirelessly supporting her husband and children in their endeavours and devoting much of her time to them. She was also endlessly supportive of her mother, siblings, cousins and their children visiting often, sharing many good times. She was loved by them all and will be dearly missed. Nadia also loved gardening, cooking, baking, outdoor adventures and travel. Visits to the forest to feed the chickadees, search for mushrooms or view the latest orchids was a regular family outing. She was an accomplished cake baker, seamstress and a pysanka maker, running children’s workshops. Her most recent passion was designing and providing Ukrainian wedding breads (Korovayi). Her love of baking was passed on to her children who enjoyed many a Ukrainian Christmas day celebration preparing rose jam filled pampushky together.

Nadia was dedicated to her Ukrainian heritage, volunteering frequently to share her organizational, cooking, baking and artistry skills for the benefit of the community. In the early years she was the administrator at the Holy Spirit Ukrainian Catholic Seminary. Later she was instrumental in organizing the Christmas and Easter bazaars at the Ottawa Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral, and at the inaugural Capital Ukrainian Festival. As the Branch Manager at Buduchnist Credit Union, Nadia organized many events that benefitted the Ukrainian community in Ottawa.

Nadia is predeceased by her father Jaroslav Dubik and is survived by her husband Wally, her children Andrew and Natalie, her mother Helena, her brother Bohdan (Don) and her sister Lesia.
