Wolodymyr “Walter” Pizyckyj
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved Father and Dido, Wolodymyr Pizyckyj,
on Thursday, August 8, 2019, at the age of 92 years.
Walter was born in Hrabkiwci, Ukraine on October 24, 1926. He arrived in Canada in November 1948.
His first job was cutting trees in the forests of Kapuskasing. He then went on to work in Toronto in
various store bakeries and restaurants. He also worked on the train in the dining car and travelled all
across Canada, settling in Winnipeg. He got a job at the Royal Alexander and Fort Garry Hotels, later at
Deer Lodge Hospital, and then eventually as a Food Service officer at Stony Mountain Institution, a
Federal penitentiary, from where he retired in 1988. Walter was predeceased by his parents, two
brothers, his sister, brother-in-law, and niece in Ukraine.
Walter leaves to mourn his two daughters, Lesia Wagner and Irene Pizyckyj, and granddaughter,
Christina Wagner. He is also survived by numerous extended family in Ukraine.
Walter loved to travel to see his daughter Irene in Neuchatel, Switzerland , where they travelled all over
Europe and Ukraine, and he was able to return to the village where he was born. He also visited his
daughter Lesia and granddaughter Christina in Houston, Texas, numerous times.
Walter loved to volunteer and help others and would always come to lend a hand to help. He was also a
member of Institute Prosvita and a parishioner at Sts. Volodomyr & Olha Cathedral.
Prayers will be held at Sts. Volodymyr and Olha Cathedral on August 14 at 7:00 p.m.
Funeral Liturgy will be held at Sts. Volodymyr & Olha Cathedral on August 15 at 10:00 a.m.
Pallbearers will be Ed Soares, Mirek Kupczak, Greg Kupczak, Bill Willms, Peter Manastyrsky and George
Sharaburak.
Donations may be made in his memory to Милосердя. (The Humanitarian Association of Ukrainian
Volunteers)
