It is with great sadness, that our family announces the passing of our beloved Father, Grandfather, Brother, and Uncle Brian at Concordia Place Personal Care Home on August 11, 2024 at the age of 78.
Brian was predeceased by both of his parents, and his brother Douglas. He survived by his ex wife, Sandra, daughters Tammy (Jeff), Jennifer (Andrew), son Matthew, 3 grandchildren: Colby, Raiden, Kyra, as well as his sister Sharon and many nieces and nephews.
Brian was born in Winnipeg Manitoba at St Boniface Hospital to proud parents Olive Starratt, and Baldwin Dewey. He spent his youth growing up in Hudson Ontario with his big brother Douglas and younger sister Sharon.
Brain attended Sioux Lookout Queen Elizabeth Highschool and later Chicago Vocational Diesel. He then studied at Auto Trade School in Toronto as a welder, and then went on to receive a diploma in deep sea diving in Oakland California.
Sometime later he moved from Hudson Ontario to British Colombia with his brother to work on big laker ships. A few years later they moved back home to Hudson, to work at the local paper mill. Eventually Brian moved to Thunder Bay for a welding job. It was there he met his wife Sandra whom he married June 19, 1979. They bought their first home in Fort William and began their family.
Brian was a devoted father to his three children, he built a skating rink in the winter over his garden bed, put up a basketball net on the garage, as well as swimming lessons, ensuring all his children could swim like a fish, just like him. Brian was also a lover of animals, which he showed by having many pets over the years. Brian was a wonderful father.
When the children finally left the nest, a few years later Brian moved to Winnipeg Manitoba to be closer to them.
Brian was very inventive, and a very talented handyman. He had the knack at being able to repair absolutely anything, a gift that was enjoyed and loved by all his family and friends. Brian was everyone’s backyard mechanic, if you had any form of vehicle issues, didn’t matter make or model, he could fix it. If it was broken, Brian could fix it!!
As the years went by, and as arthritis came upon him, this didn’t stop him from continuing to work with his hands. Brian was as very determined man. He loved to cook, it was a passion of his that once again he loved to share with his family, and plethora of friends. His door was always open.
Brian was very proud of an old wooden blue tugboat that he had acquired, and spent much time on at the boat club. We had many an adventure on that old wooden boat. Brian loved to travel and explore, taking us back to him home town of Hudson to visit family and friends, Long Lac, and Caramat to visit his sister Sharon and husband. Our family also loved camping on lake Pagwachaun, making lasting memories.
Brian was very active in his church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Days Saints, having gone on many temple trips and spending many hours doing charity and community work. He also enjoyed researching family history and genealogy through the church.
Cremation has taken place, and there will be a small private family gathering at a later date, in Hudson Ontario.
The family would like to express our sincere thanks to the nurses, health care aides, house keeping and doctor at Concordia Place Personal Care Home for all their compassion and care for Brian. You are angels.
Brian loved his family and they all loved their “UB”. He will be missed greatly and remembered by all whom had the pleasure of knowing him. He’s fishing in heaven, with his brother Douglas, sailing the skies in that old blue tug boat.
“Love you, UB”
