It is with profound sadness that the family announces the passing of Clare McCarthy on Monday, May 15, 2023, in her sixty-first year. Predeceased by her mother, Martha, Clare is survived by her father, Don, sister Mary and brothers John, William and David, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, nieces, one great-nephew and two great-nieces.
Born just a few days after her family moved to Winnipeg, Clare was faced with the challenges in life that come with having Down Syndrome. However, with the love of her parents and family, and with support from many friends, teachers, social workers and colleagues, she was able to live a full rewarding and independent life. Clare had her own apartment, and worked for many years at Burger King, where she was frequently named Employee of the Month. She also participated in the Special Olympics over a great many years, particularly in swimming, winning numerous medals. Clare enjoyed bowling, and was also a big movie fan.
A remarkable woman in so many ways, Clare will surely be best remembered by those who knew her for her rapier wit, which could deflate anyone’s pretensions in an instant. Clare was a very sociable person, and people really enjoyed being in her company. She especially valued visiting with her extended family in Kansas, Oregon and California, enjoying many entertaining trips, and also hosting family when they visited Winnipeg.
The family would like to thank the staff and other residents at Simaril, who provided Clare with loving care and warm friendship over the last several years, after health issues restricted her mobility.
A funeral Mass will be held at St. Ignatius Church, 255 Stafford Street, at 1:00 PM on Thursday, June 15, 2023, to be followed by a reception in the parish hall.
