David Spence Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved David “Chick” Harvey Spence, who departed this life on January 31, 2026, at the St. Boniface Hospital Winnipeg at the age of 70 years. David was born on September 23, 1955, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. David is survived by his wife, Lucille Desjarlais; daughters, Eileen and Elizabeth (James); and grandchildren, Eric David and Sarah Lucille. David is also dearly remembered by his sisters, Kathy Mallett and Jean Nobess, as well as numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins whose lives he influenced. He was preceded in death by his father, John Arthur Spence (1988), his mother, Alice (nee Woodford, 1983), and older brothers, Ronald Albert (2012) and Andrew James (2022). David was known by this family for his wonderful sense of humour, his love of storytelling and his wonderful jokes. His large personality would light up any room he entered. As a child, David was always informing his parents and siblings about the weather, especially during the cold winters. As an adult, he continued this habit, often warning his daughters to be cautious of icy roads, strong winds, and to dress warmly. David was passionate about movies, and his personal collection included around 400 films, with a particular fondness for Godzilla’s action-packed adventures. He was an enthusiastic supporter of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. David was a proud Indigenous man and a Canadian. It was an honour to know him and witness the love he had for his family members. A person who asked for little and gave freely. He will be dearly missed. The Pallbearers will be his daughter Eileen Desjarlais, James Spence, Tylor Spence, Robert Sanderson, Barry Beardy, and Nelson Thorassie.
