Elizabeth Debreczeni – Schevelik Obituary

In Loving Memory of Elizabeth Mary Debreczeni – Schevelik

May 6, 1935 – August 10, 2025

It is with sadness we announce the peaceful passing of our Mother, Elizabeth Mary Debreczeni – Schevelik at the Kildonan Personal Care Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba at the age of 90. She leaves to mourn her daughter Susan, and sons Leslie, and James.

Elizabeth grew up in Budapest, Hungary. During the 1956 Hungarian Uprising, she made a difficult decision with her husband Laszlo Schevelik to leave their native country like so many others did to begin life in their adopted country of Canada.

They made Winnipeg their home. Many people who fled like they did also arrived and joined a culturally vibrant Hungarian community that had already been established since 1924. The new immigrants formed life long friendships and raised families in their adopted home.

Our Mother enjoyed being active with many events held in the St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Hungarian Church. Along with her friends, they cooked and baked many of the traditional Hungarian foods and pastries that they so enjoyed, and also showcased these cultural dishes at the annual Folklorama Festival during the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s.

She was an avid gardener, a wonderful cook, and a seamstress who would always have patterns and bolts of fabric around with sewing projects always on the go. That was our Mom.

Elizabeth held dear her connections with friends, especially Rosza who was like a mother to her when she arrived in Winnipeg. She appreciated the many friends she made; Marika and John, Agi and Tony, Martha and Julius, Klara and Emil, Olga and John, Ildi and Bondi, Ida and Deju, Irene and Ali and Oszkar (Ossie)……just to name a few.

She valued her neighbor on Bunns Grove the Kramer family, and Mary who continued to stay in touch when she moved to Victoria, BC. She enjoyed hosting and attending dinner parties and meeting new people, especially Hungarians that came to Winnipeg after she arrived.

Her friendships overseas included Csaba Schevelik, Ilonya Rumpler, and Susanna Kittel in Baden, Switzerland, and Attila Schevelik in Szecseny, Hungary, and Joszef and Laci Olah in Budapest, Hungary. There were so many more, but the list would be long. Elizabeth loved
traveling and was fortunate to have visited many places in the world during her lifetime.

We would like to thank the staff at the Kildonan Personal Care Centre for the effort in making her time there as comfortable as possible. A special thanks to Lucie, Fritz, and Alan for their
patience, understanding, compassion, and professionalism in the work and service they provided.

Inurnment of her ashes beside her Mother as requested will take place in private at the Regnum Marianum Catholic Church in Budapest, Hungary.

Remembrances and condolences may be made on the Korban Funeral Chapel website.
