Fred John Amman
September 11, 1954 – September 23, 2025
On Tuesday, September 23, 2025, Fred passed away at his home.
Fred is survived by his sister-in-law, Cynthia Amman, his aunt Lena Amman-McKinnon, and many cousins. He is lovingly remembered by all of his relatives and his many friends and acquaintances. He was predeceased by his father in 2001, mother and brother in 2009, and brother Henry in 2020.
Fred was born September 11, 1954 in Ste. Rose du Lac. As the youngest of three brothers he was always trying to catch up and keep up. He took his schooling in Ste. Rose and graduated in 1973. After school he held several different jobs in construction and with highways before joining the staff of the Dauphin Herald. His eye for colour made him a natural to get into the colour printing aspect of the Herald. In 1989 he left Ste. Rose for a job in Winnipeg, still in the printing business. He was very exacting with his work – never satisfied with giving the customer anything less than his best. To that end he took special care of the Heidelberg Press that he used. Photocopying was no challenge for his eye for colour. When he started talking about retiring, his co-workers begged him to write down his “recipes” for each colour he mixed so they would be able to replicate them. He never needed those recipes as he could just look at the colour, and he knew what he needed to recreate it. Unfortunately, his hours and the type of work he did left little time or desire to work on his personal art that he had enjoyed and excelled at while still at home.
His faith was always first with him though. He would willingly share it with anyone who asked. He accepted Christ as his Saviour at the age of 12 followed by baptism several years later. He was involved in his home church, Grace Baptist Church, singing in the choir, teaching Sunday School, leading the Junior Youth group, and counselling at Wellman Lake Baptist Camp. When he moved to Winnipeg, McDermot Avenue Baptist Church became his home church and he quickly became involved in their choir and youth programs. In the last many years he remained a dedicated teacher with the Kids Church program taking his turn teaching just two short weeks ago.
His church life and work might make it seem he had no time for anything else, but family and friends were extremely important, too. He loved nothing more than to sit and visit no matter the occasion.
Fred was a man that many in the last few weeks described as wise. A man who when he spoke, only did so after considering his words. As a man of integrity, he lived as he spoke. He was a mentor to many and special in many ways. Always a man of God.
