Peacefully, on Friday, October 18th, after a long fought battle with cancer, Greg passed from this life at the age of 65 with his son and God-Daughter / Niece by his side. Greg was predeceased by his Wife of 28 years Donna Bergese (2022), his Mother Sonia Romaniuk (2016), Mother in law Rosemarie Bergese (Ruth) (2013), and his Father in law Dominique Bergese (Dom) (2016).
Left to cherish his memory are his son Brandon, siblings Barb (Paul), Marcia (John), Nick, Illana, Patrick (Leigh) along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Greg was born and raised in Winnipeg's West End. After graduating from Tec Voc High School in 1976. He moved to Calgary for a brief period before moving back and working. He spent the majority of his 20s working construction and bouncing at Tolstoi / Vita / Gardenton socials. He then worked for UNF (1987-1991) and the Silver Spike Saloon (1992-2003) during which he attended CDI College of Business and Technology where he graduated with a computer programming diploma. Once his son was born he decided it was time to slow down and he went back to work for H&R Block where he then climbed the chain and eventually was headhunted to work for Canada Revenue Agency from where he retired.
Greg was very proud of his Ukrainian Heritage, whether it was celebrating Ukrainian Christmas, playing his accordion, belonging to CYM (Canadian Ukrainian Youth Association) or volunteering at the Ukraine Kyiv Pavilion.
Greg will be remembered most for his positive attitude and devotion to his family. It seemed like no matter what he was going through he was smiling. Everytime he was asked how he was, he’d answer with “livin’ the dream”, much to the disdain of his family members as his “dream” would be a nightmare for others. As a Father he was present and proud in his son's life, attending every sporting event imaginable along with cheering on from the side lines and sharing videos of said competition with anyone who would sit next to him.
The family would like to thank Victoria General Hospital Urgent Care as well as Health Sciences Center for taking care of Greg this past month and countless other times.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, November 16th 2024 at 2 p.m. at Korban Funeral Chapel, 907 Main Street, officiated by Father Bohdan Lukie.
A private interment will be held at a later date for immediate family only, at his request.
Flowers are graciously declined. A donation to the Kidney Foundation of Canada, Canadian Diabetes Association or the Canadian Cancer Society may be made in Greg’s name.
