Hazel Halpin Obituary

Peacefully, with family by her side, Hazel June Halpin passed away on Monday, June 6, 2022, at the age of 91 years in Victoria B.C.

June was born and raised in Winnipeg by parents Irene(nee Mack) and Steve Baker.  At an early age, she lost her mother to illness and was raised by her father with help from the Mack families. She attended boarding school at Balmoral Hall and graduated in 1948. She married Ross Halpin of Pine Falls In 1950 and had three children Jacqueline, Michelle, and Gordon. The family lived in Pine Falls, Winnipeg, and Portage La Prairie. June came back home to Winnipeg in 1987 and in 2021, with her health failing, went to Victoria to live with her daughter Jacqueline and Harry Ray until her passing.

June was actively involved in activities such as 5-pin bowling, mall walking, gardening, curling, golf, line dancing, tai chi, card club and trips to Cuba.  She worked in jewelry sales at Hudson Bay and Birks in downtown Winnipeg and at Reesors Jewelers in Portage La Prairie. She was a beautiful and charming employee, excellent at serving her customers. June would meet and keep many friends through her work and activities in the neighbourhoods and places she lived.

June would never miss the opportunity to get together with family for the special occasions of holidays weddings or birthdays. She would take the overnight bus to Flin Flon to visit Gordon and Michelle’s families, or fly to B.C. to see Jacqueline’s family or to Calgary to see her aunt Dorothy and niece Valdine.

June, Grandma-June, Mom, a beautiful kind soul, will be sadly missed by all who knew her. She is pre-deceased by her daughter Michelle Belfry(John). Leaving behind in her passing, daughter Jacqueline Ray (Harry), son Gordon (Jody), grandchildren Anna Michelle, Andrea, Brett(Bria), Carley, Christopher, Daniel (Emma), Jaycee(Ryan), and great-grandchildren Jillian, Natalie, Klarali and Sessilja.

Jacqueline and Gordon would like to thank all the friends family and caregivers who have helped us take care of our mom in her final years, especially Helen Halpin who faithfully would call her and visit to keep an eye on her when we were so far away. Thanks to the staff at Harmony Court in Riverwood Square, also in Victoria, Dr. Pat Gunton, Maggie Gibson, Janice Brown, Community Health Care Nursing and Respite Team, and Victoria Hospice Palliative Care. Special hugs go to Jackie and Harry for taking mom into their home and giving her special care and love in her final days.
