It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved son, husband, and father Jeffery Allan Sweetland on May 22nd, 2023 at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg Manitoba. Jeff was born in Winnipeg on February 7th, 1970. He was the son of Raymond and Mary and baby brother to Sheila and Sherri. Jeff was predeceased by his grandparents, Leslie and Evelyn Sweetland (WPG), Grandma Josephine Belgarde (ND), and many aunts, uncles and cousins in Canada and the United States.
Jeff grew up in St. James and attended Stevenson-Britannia School and St. James Collegiate. He played basketball, baseball, football and other various sports. He also showed interest in activities such as fishing, hunting and tinkering with cars at a young age. Jeff began working when he was young. At 16, he began working as a dock worker at Styleman’s Apparel in Winnipeg. He explored various jobs including printing press operator at Auto Trader, security/bouncing for concerts and shows, electrician, delivery driver, and awning manufacturer. Jeff suffered a job injury in 2005 that led him to re-explore the path of finishing his education. He returned to adult education through Stevenson-Britannia and received his high school diploma in 2007. Jeff excelled in his programs and received the Conscientious Achievement Award in school.
Jeff met his future love Jennifer when he was 20 and she was 17 at Robin’s Donuts in downtown Winnipeg. He frequented this coffee shop daily and made many relationships with the patrons and workers over the years. Jeff and Jennifer’s friendship developed over time while he was working out of town. In March of 1995, their first daughter Autumn Rose June was born. Jeff chose to come off the road to work in Winnipeg to be closer to his family. Jeff was a jack of all trades. In 2000, he modified the cottage to their year-round home where they resided for many years. He could take anything apart and figure out how to put it back together better than the original design. Jeff enjoyed outdoor activities of hunting, ice fishing and snowmobiling. Jeff loved to participate in ice-fishing derbies. Jeff had struggles with Diabetes over the years. This disease hindered his work life until he reached the point of permanent disability. In 2014, Jeff’s daughter Avery Renee Josephine was born. The same year Jeff had a battle with Sepsis and was diagnosed with kidney disease. Jeff learned to perform his own dialysis treatments at home which gave him pride and independence. Thank you to all the nurses, doctors, allied and support staff that gave Jeff aid over the years. He greatly respected his Teams at Seven Oakes Hospital PD and Home Hemodialysis. His family is thankful for the angels in these units who provided him warmth and care. He enjoyed his chats with each and every one of you. Thank you to the nurses and doctors in the ICU of the Health Sciences Centre for being there for Jeff and making his last day as comfortable as could be.
Rest easy my Love until we meet again.
