John Boychuk Obituary

With great sadness, we the family announce the passing of John Boychuk on Friday, 13 May 2022, at home.

John leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife Gloria of 58 years; daughters Elizabeth (Ron) and Mary (Dave), and sons Rick (Rose), Roger, and Ringo (Wendy); grandchildren Julie, Craig, Alex, Trina, Madison and Cole, and step-grandchildren Tia and Matthew, as well as his sisters Elsie and Nancy (Bob), and sister-in-law Alice, and many nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.

John was predeceased by his father Tony, mother Mary, step-mother Millie, brother Walter, and brother-in-law Elmer.

John loyally served in the Water & Waste Department for the City of Winnipeg for 30 years. Dad was an exemplary employee through his steadfast commitment and a good work ethic. He retired at the age of 54.

Anyone who knew John knew he loved sports! When he wasn’t watching sports, he could be seen 5-pin bowling, hunting and fishing, playing baseball, curling, billiards, and holey holey.

Through sports, Johnny made many life-long friends. He was admired for his natural ability and passion for the game. He bowled for many years with the mixed league of the Association of United Ukrainian Canadians. He won trophies for the High Triple and High Single. His skill helped his teammates compete in various out-of-town tournaments. He even tried to cash in on his talent by participating in CKND’s ‘Bowling for Dollars.’

In his later years, he traded in his baseball glove for pom-poms, cheering on his children and grandchildren in sponge hockey, soccer and baseball.

Dad was the life of the party! Whether he was entertaining friends from church at breakfast or socializing at the casino, or with the group on the casino bus tours, he always had a joke to tell. Whether it was a good joke or a bad joke he was very animated and held a captive audience.

John lived a full life and had many hobbies. He enjoyed going to the Assiniboine Downs to bet on the horses. He was an avid card player,  he especially liked playing hearts with Ted and Odelia. And on a daily basis, he loved doing crossword puzzles and jumble puzzles, which led to fierce competition with Gloria.

Being raised on a farm, John appreciated being outdoors. He loved travelling and camping with his family across Canada and the USA. He also enjoyed cottage life…at someone else’s cottage. He looked forward to his annual cottage visits with friends from church, and Ringo and Wendy’s cottage in Gimli.

After suffering from health issues for many years, John is finally at peace. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

We would like to thank all those from WHRA Palliative Care, especially Angela, Amanda, and Nathalie for their compassionate care.
