Katie Shistowski Obituary

It is with the heaviest of hearts that the family of Katie Shistowski announces her passing on April 5, 2023, at the age of 103 with her son Eugene by her side.

Left to cherish her memory and the immense love that she had for her family are her son Eugene, her grandchildren, Charlene Dempster (John), Chris Shistowski (Anroup), Jennifer Nagam (Steve), Larissa Lemoine, and Brent Shistowski; great-grandchildren Kelsey Marcotte (Rob), Jake Hodgert, Emma, Anna, Suren, and Tiya Shistowski, Jarret and Amy Nagam, Max Lemoine, and Aiden and Alya Shistowski.

Katie was predeceased by her husband Steve in 1999, and son Tony in 2014.

Katie immigrated to Canada from Ukraine in 1929 with her parents and two of her sisters, and they settled on a farm near Elphinstone, Manitoba. After Katie and Steve married in 1942, they moved to a farm just outside of Sandy Lake Manitoba, where Eugene and Tony were born. In 1956, they made Winnipeg’s North End their home until Steve accepted a job offer in Vancouver in 1971.

While being caretakers of their apartment building in Port Coquitlam, Steve worked full time, and Katie worked just as hard inside their home. She had quite a successful perogy business, with her most regular customers being Steve’s co-workers. Baba always had a roll of $2 bills, as that was her prize for a dozen of the most amazing perogies in the world. Whenever Baba & Dido would come to Winnipeg to visit, they would give each of their grandkids a brown paper bag filled with goodies…and a $2 bill.

When Steve retired in 1986, they built a home in Maple Ridge, BC. Family, friends, and neighbours were always welcome with open arms into their home.  Nothing was more important to them than family.

After Steve’s passing, Katie moved back to Winnipeg to be closer to family, and in 2013 she moved to St. Joseph’s Nursing Home, where she lived very happily and comfortably.

Katie will be lovingly remembered by her nieces and nephews as “Auntie Bingo”. She was one of a kind with the sharpest wit and a sense of humour that lit up a room.

Eugene would like to extend his deepest gratitude to the caregivers at St. Joseph’s. Mom always talked about how well taken care of she was.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, April 12, 2023, at 10:30 am at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, 737 Bannerman Avenue.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Manitoba.
