It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Margaret (Tootsie) Davis — our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend. Mom passed away peacefully at Donwood Manor Personal Care Home on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at the age of 90.
Mom was born in Winnipeg, MB, to Robert and Margaret Murphy. As the eldest of eight children, she naturally took on a caregiver role from a young age, especially with her mother frequently in the hospital. Her nurturing spirit was evident to all who knew her, and it remained a defining part of her throughout her life. Whether she was caring for her younger siblings, supporting family members, helping friends in need, or welcoming foster children and teenagers into her home, Mom was always ready to open her heart and her door. There was always “room at the inn,” and she made sure everyone had a roof over their head, a warm meal, and a safe place to land. Even in her final months at Donwood, she continued looking out for others — gently gesturing to staff or family when someone needed a hand, always ensuring those around her felt seen and cared for.
Mom possessed many skills and was a quick learner, which allowed her to pursue a wide variety of jobs and careers. From seamstress to kitchen supervisor, Tupperware sales agent to cloakroom attendant — she excelled in everything she took on. She spent many years sewing for the Fabric Centre before launching her own seamstress business, creating table linens, drapes, clothing, bridesmaid dresses and more. Her work could be found in private homes, commercial businesses, and theatres across the city — a testament to both her talent and her dedication.
Her love of cooking eventually led her to a position as kitchen supervisor at Congregation Shaarey Zedek Synagogue, where she catered a wide range of events — from Bar and Bat Mitzvahs and business luncheons to weddings and preparing food for families during Shiva. Mom played an integral role in many important moments, from the most joyful celebrations to the most solemn gatherings. This experience inspired her to start her own catering business, which kept her incredibly busy — all while raising a family, volunteering her time, and continuing to care for those around her.
In addition to her professional life, Mom was a tireless and committed volunteer. She lent a hand wherever needed — from building dikes during the 1950 flood and preparing food for the workers during the 1997 flood, to working in community centre canteens, preparing meals for volunteers, organizing blood drives, or driving kids from the community to hockey, sometimes picking them up as early as 5:30 AM.
Her strongest and most enduring commitment was to the Royal Canadian Legion Elmwood Branch #9. She began in the coatroom and helped with the annual Poppy Campaign before taking on leadership roles. Over the years, she served as By-law Chair, Hospital Visiting Chair, Treasurer, First Vice-President, and President of the Ladies Auxiliary. Through the Legion, she helped organize countless community events — from teas and memorials to New Year’s parties, BBQs for Legion Garden residents, and started catering for private hall rentals.
One event especially close to her heart was the annual Over-65 Christmas Dinner for Branch and Ladies Auxiliary members. Mom ensured that everyone — including those unable to attend due to health or mobility issues — received a hot, home-cooked meal. This dinner ran every year from 1967 into the 2010s, and she was proud to help carry on that tradition for so many decades.
Despite her busy schedule, Mom made time for the things that brought her joy. She enjoyed collecting coins, travelling with friends, taking bus trips to the U.S., finding the best deals — whether through sales or coupon clipping — going to the casino, and most of all, supporting her grandchildren and great-grandchildren at their sports, theatre, and music events. Her family was her pride and joy, and she never missed a chance to be there for them.
Mom leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish her memory: her children Laurie (Sid), Linda (Fred), Patrick (Josie), and daughter-in-law Robin; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; her sisters Carol (Eddie) and Shirley; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Gilbert; son, Glenn; grandson, Cole; great-grandson, Adrian; parents, Robert and Margaret; and siblings Sonny, Dorothy, Arnold, Eleanor, and Lillian.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at St. Boniface Hospital and the Geriatric Rehab Unit at Seven Oaks Hospital. We are especially grateful to the team at Donwood Manor for the care and kindness shown to Mom during her time there. The warm and compassionate environment made her feel truly at home. She especially enjoyed bingo, singing, arts and crafts, and relaxing outdoors with fellow residents — simple pleasures that brought her joy.
A private family viewing and cremation have taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, July 30, 2025. Doors open at 1:30 PM, with the service beginning at 2:00 PM, at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, 85 Israel Asper Way, Winnipeg, MB.
