It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved Mother, Baba and Prababa, Maria Stefanyshyn, on Friday, May 29 at the age of 99 years.
Maria was born in Ternopil Region of Ukraine in Wojciehowka, on January 15, 1927 to her parents Aleksander and Annia (Mazurkiewicz) Szkwarek. Because of the war the family relocated to Poland where she grew up. During the late 1960s, Maria emigrated to Canada where she met Michael Stefanyshyn. They were married in July 1970 and took up residence in Oshawa Ontario.
While Michel was building cars for General Motors, Maria helped raising Michael’s son Larry and occupying herself cleaning houses. Maria was an extremely religious and devout woman. She was a long-time member St. George’s Ukrainian Catholic Church as well as a member of the Dniepro Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League.
Following retirement, they relocated to Winnipeg in 2010 and reunited with her sisters Joyce, Aniela and Stella and their extended families. Continuing her religious devotion she was a long-time member of Sts. Volodymyr and Olha Cathedral.
Maria was predeceased by her husband, Michael Stefanyshyn in 2016. She is also survived by her step-sons Jerry (Slawko) and Larry (Lewko) and numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family in Canada and Poland.
We would like to thank the St Paul’s staff of Holy Family Nursing Home for their kind and compassionate care.
