Mary (Marie) Meawasige

It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Mary Meawasige, of Wpg Mb.  She passed away on Monday, October 3, 2022 at the age of 77.

She is survived by her daughters; Julie (Jake), Wendy (Chris), Sandy, Melissa (Wayne),  Stacey and by 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. 

She also leaves to mourn her, her sister Shirley (Chris), nieces and nephews; Sherry, Allister (Tanya), Trista (Tyler), Troy and Shawn (Debbie).  As well as great nieces and nephews. 

Mary was predeceased by her parents, Jake and Betty Bergen, Brother, Don Bergen, her sister, Elma Mcdougall and a nephew, Derek Bergen. 

Mary was born in Winkler, Mb on May 12, 1945. She spent her younger years moving around Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba as her dad worked on the pipeline.

She moved to northwestern Ontario, where she met Phil, married, and they had five girls. Mary ended up in Ear Falls, Ontario, where she raised her five daughters. She was one of the first women to work in the pulp and paper industry. She worked for Ear Falls Contracting, where she operated heavy equipment.

Mary loved fishing, blueberry, picking, bingo, and playing cards. She spent many hours on the lake, in bingo halls, and around the table playing cards with her sisters. 

In 2020, her health issues became a problem, and her sisters Elma and Shirley became her caregivers. In 2021, after a lengthy hospital stay, she moved into Maples Care Home where she lived until her passing.

When Elma passed in January 2022, Mary’s health declined even more. Shirley was a dedicated sister spending so much time tending to Mary’s needs.

A special thank you goes to her niece, Trista Pengelly, for all her help and for being there with Mary at the time of her passing.

Cremation has taken place. A private family memorial will be held at a later date.
