Mary Turko Obituary

Peacefully on May 18th at Luther Home, Mary went to be with her Lord and to be reunited with her husband Nicholas (2001) and her parents Konstantyn (1992) and Anna (1997).

Born in the village of Nowicki, district of Tarnopil, Western Ukraine.  At her young age Mary and her Mother immigrated to Canada to be reunited with her Father.

Mary completed her high school and one year of Commercial College at St. Mary’s Academy.

Following graduation, Mary embarked on a career in the federal civic service, where she worked for 18 years.  During her working years, Mary was always upgrading herself by taking courses in Red River College.

For relaxation, Mary enjoyed crafts, dress making, embroidery, cooking, reading and gardening.  She loved listening to music, singing in community and church choirs, and often attended the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. Later in life, she enjoyed reading Ukrainian books to her aged parents.

Mary was generous to her church and her cousins in Ukraine, frequently sending care packages and money, which they deeply appreciated.

In their married life, Nicholas and Mary did lots of travelling.  Mary accompanied her husband to his second-to-last posting in Rivers Air Force Base, and upon his retirement, they took up residence in Westwood, Assiniboia.

Mary and Nicholas joined St. Basil’s Parish in 1971 and Mary became active in UCWLC and held a number of positions in the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League of Canada.  For her long and dedicated service, Mary recently earned a 10-year pin from the Association. She also belonged to the Apostleship of Prayer.

Marry will be lovingly remembered by her brother-in-law, Rev. Bro. Emil Turko OSBM of New York City. Her cousins Dorothy Sopinick, Robert Burmachuk and family, by her cousins in Peace River, Alberta, her godson Borys Dudar and family in Minneapolis, her god-daughter Theresa Shachter in Winnipeg and Susan Motluk in Toronto, as well as many relatives in Ukraine.

The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the Doctors and Staff at Luther Home for their kind and compassionate care.

Mary wished to thank her dear friends, the Fediuk family, Sam and Sylvia Szwaluk for caring for her after she had her hip surgeries.  Also, all her Parish friends for your prayers and visits.

Divine Liturgy will be celebrated June 10th, at 10 a.m., at St Basil's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 202 Harcourt St., with Fr. Mykhaylo Khomitskyy officiating.  Interment to follow reception at All Saints Cemetery
