With the deepest sorrow we announce that on Sunday December 11, 2022 our Dad and Dido, Michael (Mike) Zubach passed away peacefully at the age of 97. Left to Mourn his passing are his sons Roman (Olia) and Brian (Nadia), grandchildren Larysa (Yuri), Katryna (Johnathan), Mark (Vanessa), Leyanna (Gianfranco), Michael (Tatiana) and 10 great grandchildren Nayda, Liam, Issac, Luca, Alayna, Danika, Gracie, Adrian, Anthony and Audrina. He was predeceased by his wife Pearl (our Baba) of 66 years in November 2011 and all of his family in Ukraine.
Dido was born on January 1, 1925 in Wulka-Obrovska, Ukraine. At the age of 15, Dido was taken from his from his village in Ukraine to work in Germany as forced labour during the Second World War. Following the end of the War, Dido was transferred to Camp Lyssenko in Hanover, Germany where he met Baba and eventually married in October 1945. In 1952 the family immigrated to Canada and eventually made their way by train to Winnipeg where they settled. Dido’s first job in Canada was as a lumberjack in Northern Ontario with Abitibi Power and Paper. As this job removed from his family in Winnipeg for periods of time, through a friend he found new employment with Modern Diaries Ltd., where he worked until retirement in 1990.
He was a huge fan of the Bombers during the Bud Grant era and would frequently attend their practices after work. He was a hard-working and generous man with a great sense of humour and respected by all who knew him. He very much loved and was proud of his family and especially enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s school and sports activities.
The family wishes to express its heartfelt gratitude to the staff at the Holy Family Home for the compassion and care they provided Mike. Special thank you to Dr. Taras Babick and Dr. Andrea Babick for their heartfelt care.
Divine liturgy will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Saturday December 17 at St. Joseph’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, 250 Jefferson Avenue, Winnipeg. Interment will follow at the All Saints Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, and in remembrance of Michael, donations may be made to the LUBOV SSMI Foundation 1085 Main Street, Winnipeg MB R2W 3S1.
