Myrtle Irene Shmyr
March 27, 1946 to June 10, 2025
It is with great sadness that we announce that Myrtle (Irene) Shmyr, née Stevenson, 79, of Brandon, MB, the youngest child of Robert and Irene Stevenson, passed away peacefully on June 10, 2025, with her family by her side, both in person and virtually.
Irene was born on March 27, 1946. She was energetic, strong willed, determined and goal oriented from the beginning. These traits helped her overcome many hardships and obstacles in her lifetime.
She lived in many places during her life, including Souris; Virden; Coronation, AB; on farm outside of Shoal Lake; and, for the last several years of her life, in Brandon.
Her whole life, she had a love for animals, especially horses and Siamese cats, which was reflected in the extensive menagerie of birds and animals that resided on the farm!
Irene was passionate about her collections, including figurines, CP trains, vinyl records and absolutely anything about royalty.
She was also the type of person who was more than willing to lend a helping hand to anyone down on their luck...but no matter who you were, she would "chit-chat" your ears off; she could strike up a conversation about anything with anyone! She could frequently be seen enjoying coffee with her son, Jason, and her friends at her favorite place, Wendy's on 18th Street in Brandon.
In the last several years of her life, Irene loved to spend time with her family, including camping with them or flying out to visit them.
Irene is survived by her children and grandchildren, Diane (Murray) and Morgan Alcock; Brian (Connie), Taylor and Sean Kay; Barbara (Michael), Amanda, Hannah, Sarah and Mikey Jacobson; Debra (Vance) and Keyarra Montgomery; Aaron, Lily and Nellie Shmyr (Stacey); Jason Shmyr as well as sisters Shirley Vit and June (Mervyn) Harkness.
She is pre-deceased by her daughter Caroline in infancy, her siblings Fred (Marge) Stevenson, Roy (Eleanor) Stevenson, Doreen (Earl) Crawford,brother-in-law Guido Vit and her former husband Nestor Shmyr.
A Celebration of Life will be held in July at the Souris Cemetery.
