Walter Soloway Obituary

Peacefully at Victoria Hospital on Wednesday, March 26th, 2025 Wally passed away, aged 84 years of Winnipeg.

He is survived by his wife Betty (Kutkewich), daughter Suzanne, son Dave (Shelley Fletcher), granddaughters Jordan (Andy) and Keely. Bonus granddaughters Sheyanne (Isaiah) and Abby.  Great-grandchildren, Harlowe, Hunter and Laken.

He is predeceased by his parents Peter and Mary Soloway, parent-in-laws Frank and Lillian Kutkewich. Also, by his fur baby, Neighbour.

Wally grew up in Elmwood, then residing in East Kildonan.  He grew up being quite involved at Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Parish, the old and new church.  He married Betty on July 4th, 1964.  Their daughter Suzanne was born in 1965 and their son Dave was born in 1968.  Wally was employed with the Manitoba Highways Department – Bridge Division.  Retiring with the magic number “80” at age 55 years.

Dad was very well known in East Kildonan/Elmwood area.  Over the years, he was heavily immersed in the hockey community. His involvement included coaching at Melrose Community Club, as well as serving as Vice-President of the club for many years. He was a scheduler for the River East Transcona Golden Boy Tournament, Executive Director for the Red River Valley league, and an Executive member for the River East Minor Hockey Association and the secretary/treasurer for the River East Royal Knights major junior hockey team.  He also volunteered for the Pan Am Games in Winnipeg.

Dad was a member of the Kiwanis and East St. Paul Lions clubs.  At one point in his life, he even ran for City Councillor in EK/Elmwood. To say he was a legend in EK would be putting it mildly.

The family would like to thank the staff of HSC and Victoria Hospital.  Special thank you to Father Michael Winn for visiting Wally at the hospital and administering the sacraments.  Also, special thanks to Jessica Sookermany at Korban Funeral Chapel.

Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, April 8th at Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Church, 505 Watt St. at 11:00 a.m. with Father Winn officiating.
