Zorian Hudyma Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Zorian Hudyma on April 30th, 2025. He is survived by his loving wife Leona Hudyma, son Zenon Hudyma (Kyra Stefanson), daughter Larissa Holowchuk, son-in-law Peter, grandchildren Ella, Nathan and Zaiden, Sister Maria Kohut (Clarence). He was predeceased by his parents Ivan and Anna Hudyma and daughter-in-law Victoria Banner.

Zorian (Zotch) was born in 1942 in the province of Ternopil, in a farming village in Ukraine. This was during WWII which would change the trajectory of his life. His father Ivan Hudyma was taken by the Soviet army to join as a soldier. Zorian grew up with his Mother Anna, sister Maria and Grandmother on the farm for his young life. He would later emigrate to Winnipeg as a teen with his mother and sister to be reunited with his Father.

In Winnipeg he learned English and continued his proud Ukrainian heritage as part of the Ukrainian youth club CYM. He thrived here staying on for 10 years as Youth Leader and Camp Director. Through CYM and church he met his future wife, Leona Kondrat. They spent weekends at the farm with Leona’s large family and visiting friends. They married in 1970 and had two children, Zenon and Larissa. They enjoyed many summer weeks at Ukrainian Park and meeting many friends through their church St. Joseph’s.

Later in life Zorian and Leona enjoyed yearly visits to the Cayman Islands where their daughter Larissa lived with her family, enjoying time with their grandkids Ella, Nathan and Zaiden who they adored. They would continue to dote on their grandkids once they moved back to Winnipeg, enjoying all their many accomplishments.

Zorian played volleyball as a teen and took up golf as an adult, including spending half the afternoon looking for golf balls in the bush. He loved watching sports on tv, especially tennis, golf, the Jets and the Blue Bombers. Zorian loved to listen to his beloved Ukrainian music, either dancing to a polka or shedding a tear to his home country’s ballads.  Zotch had a great sense of humor and the biggest heart. He showed his endless love with hugs, phone calls or handing the kids some cash for a goal they scored, for a good grade or just for coming by to say Hi.

To say Zorian was resilient would be an understatement. He was diagnosed with cancer in 2020. He would undergo many treatments that would change him physically forever. He endured this without complaints and kept moving forward in life with his loving and caring wife by his side. Although his cancer remained stable, an unrelated health concern took him from us suddenly. Thank you to the team at Cancer Care for looking after him for many years, giving us more time with him. We wish we had even more.

We love you Zorian, Zotch, Dad, Dido.

Your wings were ready, but our hearts were not.

Vichnaya Pamyat!
