Bruno Falvo Obituary

BRUNO FALVO

January 13, 1928 – May 24, 2021

With great sadness we announce the passing of our loving husband and dad, Bruno Falvo, on May 24, 2021 at Seven Oaks Hospital at the age of 93.  We are left with heavy hearts but are comforted knowing he has reunited with many family and friends who passed before him.

Cherishing his memory are his loving wife Lucille of 71 years, his son Lorry and partner Josie, daughter Gail (Dale), grandchildren; Shayla (Dave) and Abby, great grandchildren; Kyran, Zoey and Novalee; and his favourite 4-legged friends.  Dad is survived by his sisters; Carmeline and Angie (George), brothers-in-law; Henry, Joe and Otto, sister-in-law Bertha and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Dad was born on January 13, 1928 to parents Katarina and Pietro who immigrated from Italy in 1925, taking residence in Transcona.  Dad was such a hard worker earning a living doing odd jobs at the age of 8.  At 17 he became a banquet waiter at Canadian Pacific Railway and Royal Alec, Marlborough Inn and on the CN Dining Cars for 15 years, travelling across Canada, many times working 2 jobs to provide for his family.  During this time he met his sweetheart, Lucille and they married in 1950. In 1960 Dad joined Griffin Steel Foundries where he spent the next 32 years, retiring in 1992.

In younger years Dad loved playing cards, especially crib and solitaire, roller skating and bowling.  He joined Legion #4 on Portage Avenue and enjoyed playing bingo almost every Saturday night always sharing his winnings, no matter how small, with us kids.  Although not much of a dancer he enjoyed watching others dance, especially to a great polka.  Dad always loved the beach where the family spent many weekends at Grand Beach and Oasis.   In 1978 his dream came true when he purchased a summer getaway at Betula Lake where the family spent many years enjoying the outdoors.  He was so proud of the cottage.  In 1988 he rebuilt it to ensure the family could enjoy it for years to come.  Dad, we promise to celebrate you every time we’re there!

Dad loved going on walks and spending time with grandchildren and great grandchildren who always made him smile and laugh.  He never missed an opportunity to impart words of wisdom, share a funny story or sing to them in Italian.  Holiday gatherings were his favourite always making his presence known with his famous infectious belly laugh.   Dad was a fighter surviving a stroke, a Covid 19 diagnosis, pneumonia and 7 years living with dementia.

We will miss his smile, his laugh, his sense of humour, his stories, generosity and willingness to help anyone that asked and even if they didn’t.  Dad made friends easily and although he started out sitting alone on a bench, within minutes there were others sitting with him laughing, like they were friends forever.  He was strong willed, but always caring with a love of animals.  Many a day he returned from a walk with a small bite and a story of a dog that just didn’t want a head pat. Dad, you have left us with so many memories that will live on forever!  We love you and miss you dearly!

A huge thanks to Dr. Peter Bialy for his support and care of dad.  A special thanks to the Nursing Team on the 5th floor, Unit 2 at Seven Oaks Hospital for their kindness and compassion.  You are heroes!

Cremation has taken place with a private interment to be held at a later date.  Condolences to the family can be left on the Korban Funeral Chapel Website.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Manitoba, Heart & Stroke Foundation or Winnipeg Humane Society.
