Olha Zhmur

March 10, 1927 – September 17, 2019

Peacefully, surrounded by family, Olha Zhmur (Dmytriw), passed away at Holy Family Home in Winnipeg. 

Olha was predeceased by her mother Evdokia, husband Kostiantyn, father Wasyl, son-in-law Orest. She is survived by daughter Halyna Kravtchouk (Orest), grandchildren Oksana Dudych (Tom), Rouslan (Kseniya), and great grandchildren Mark, Alyssa, Sofia, Constantin, Roman. 

Olha was born on March 10, 1927 in Chishky, Lviv Region, Western Ukraine. With political instability in Ukraine, Olha joined УПА (Ukrainian Insurgent Army) as an underground courier.  Victim of Stalinist regime, she was arrested in February 1946 and spent the next 5 years in soviet prisons and Siberian labor camp.   

Returning to Ukraine, she settled into living “quietly”.  She married handsome Kost’ from one of the neighboring villages, who could battle her in any kolomyjka sing off at all of the village celebrations.  Together they worked the fields, tended to farm animals and raised their daughter Halyna.

Olha had a great talent for embroidering.  Her perfect cross-stitch work will be treasured by all of us. She loved to sing and attended church on regular basis. 

Thank you to Dr. Taras and Dr. Andrea Babick for the wonderful care, both medical and spiritual.  Special gratitude to the dedicated and compassionate staff of St. Francis Unit at Holy Family Home.

Funeral service will be held at Korban Funeral Chapel on Friday, September 20th at 10:30 AM with Fr. John Sianchuk, CSsR officiating.

Interment to follow in Ukraine at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, if so desired, donations may be made to Holy Family Home.
