VIOLET MLODZINSKI

August 28, 1934 ~ June 28, 2021

On June 28th, suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 86 years, our mother, Baba, Old Baba, aunt & friend, Violet, left this world to be with her parents Stella & Walter, husband Leonard, brother Edward, and infant grandson Shelby.

Violet leaves her 3 precious children, Wendy, Wesley & Karen with many memories. She also leaves behind her grandchildren which were her pride & joy, Katrina, Sheyanna (Colin), Bensen (Karla), Jacob, Abby & Austen, as well as great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Hannah, Callie & newborn Eliana. Violet is survived by her sisters, Victoria, Helen (Bill), Adeline, and sister-in-law Eleanor. 

Violet was born in Selkirk, Manitoba, and raised in Highland Glen, later settling in Winnipeg with her husband Leonard, raising her 3 children. Violet’s pride was her garden, which was known to be one of the larger gardens in Transcona bringing in every vegetable you can imagine. She loved feeding everyone which made her career in catering a great choice for her. She also made custom wedding cakes which were absolutely beautiful. Her perogies were famous, and we will miss her cabbage buns, cabbage rolls, pickles, jarred tomatoes, and meatballs. She loved to sing, and even sang with her sister Helen on the radio in earlier times! However, when her grandchildren came around, she always got the lyrics to “Take Me Out To The Ball Game” wrong- even though she always insisted her lyrics were right. She was an avid viewer of her “stories”, which mainly consisted of Y&R, making sure everyone knew not to phone her between 4:30-5:30.

She loved taking her grandkids to the movies and enjoying the popcorn, even though about 5 minutes in, it was a guarantee she would fall asleep, denying it profusely when she was caught. When she became an Old Baba for the first time, she was so excited and proud to announce it to everyone. 

In her younger years, she enjoyed sewing, knitting, and crocheting.  She has crafted many pairs of slippers, hats, scarves, mittens, sweaters, doilies, and clothing pieces.  She had many talents and was very creative both inside the kitchen and out.  Over the years she enjoyed playing cards and games with friends and family. 

More of Violet’s fond memories come from being with her best friend Elsie Shack where many trips and laughs were had. Later on in life, they would bring their grandchildren together to Tinkertown in the summers. Eventually, the two even got to be “neighbours” right before Violet’s passing. 

Violet was always there for her children & grandchildren. They were her world. There was no mountain that would keep her from helping her family. Whether she was driving herself, taking a taxi, bus or plane, you could expect her to arrive within a short time frame. She got her licence late in life, and it sure didn’t take her long to develop a VERY heavy foot. She loved to embarrass her family by squealing her tires and yelling “ZOOM!” when the light turned green. We swear she should have been a race car driver. In all of her grandchildren’s lives, she became a second mother and loved every minute of it. 

We will miss you more than words can even describe. Writing this obituary was one of the hardest things we had to do. Even though we knew it would come someday, we never imagined it would be this day. You had an amazingly loving and generous heart, and we have been blessed to have had you in our lives. We only hope we could be half the person you were. You are gone from our homes, but never from our hearts and memories. Thank you for always being there for us.

Even though her stay at Irene Baron Centre was very short, the family extends our thank you to the staff. We also would like to thank the WFPS and doctors, nurses, and health care staff at St. Boniface Hospital.
